Summer Weekends in CLE

It has been a busy week with the launch of The Cleveland City Living Awards, but I couldn't resist sharing all of the awesomeness that our great city has going on this weekend!

But first, the picture above is one of the many that I snapped at Parade The Circle last weekend. I just needed to give a shout out to University Circle and The Detroit Shoreway for giving me one of the best (and free) Saturdays in Cleveland. I can't say it enough- the trollies were perfectly timed, the day was beautiful, and the crowds were happy- it was a great sign of summer!

This weekend offers just as much fun around Cleveland. I am thrilled to announce the soft opening of the first retail on E. 4th in years, Dredgers Union, that is taking place this Friday night. Danielle Deboe's latest venture looks more then promising and I can't wait to get my shop on!

Also this weekend is the 6th Annual Ohio City Market District Run & Crawl 5k. This 5k night run/walk is a sure way to kick start your Saturday night! Many of the restaurants in the neighborhood offer specials for post-race celebrating. I hope to see you there!

Party in The Square!

It may be time to Parade in The Circle, but that also means its time to Party in The Square! Saturday, June 11th The Gordon Square Arts District will transform into a big block party with Lolley The Trolley rides back and forth to University Circle from 10-8pm. The party will include live music, public theater, a beer garden, and walking tours of the neighborhood.

*Personally, I plan to bike over to Party in Gordon Square and then take one of the trolley's over to Parade in The Circle. All this will make for a great weekend in CLE! I hope to see you there!

Friday Round Up: All About The Detroit Shoreway

Looking to really kick off the weekend with a bang? There are two super great parties that will be taking place in The Detroit Shoreway this Friday night.

Pedaling Art is opening at The Wall Eye Gallery at 53rd and Detroit. Stop in from 6-11pm to check out the premiere of this exhibit, featuring art from recycling bicycle pieces and other bike inspired art. Ohio City Bike Co-Op will be providing complimentary bicycle valet if you choose to arrive on two wheels.

Another great Friday night event that is not to be missed is The Gordon Square Arts District's Hip to Be Square Party. Taking place at the Battery Park Powerhouse, this lavish event is to benefit the community with a VIP reception from 7-8pm and general admission to the party that runs from 8 to midnight. Enjoy appetizers provided by GSAD restaurants and an open wine and beer bar. VIP tickets can be purchased for $125 and general admission tickets can be purchased for $75. Detroit Shoreway Featured on WKYC

Last week WKYC did a week long feature of The Detroit Shoreway and Gordon Square Arts District, highlighting all of the hustle and bustle of this great city neighborhood. Here at Cleveland City Living, we are big proponents of EVERY city neighborhood in Cleveland, but The Detroit Shoreway has a close spot in our hearts. Its where Scott lives, and I am a close neighbor over in Ohio City- so The Detroit Shoreway neighborhood is regularly visited. Make sure you check out one of the segments here, as it features Scott and Battery Park! I look forward to seeing more city neighborhoods featured for their awesome innovations and community building!

Lots of new business happening around Gordon Square

The already-bustling Gordon Square Arts District is getting a little busier with the addition of three new retail businesses.

Wednesday marked the official opening of Sweet Moses, a soda fountain and treat shop at 6800 Detroit Avenue, one block west of the Gordon Square Arcade.

The owner is Jeff Moreau, who's offering a turn-of-the-century soda shop experience. Sweet Moses serves homemade ice cream dishes and handmade confections. Coming soon will be peanut butter sandwiches that can be topped with options including bacon, marshmallow cream, Nutella, sliced bananas and potato chips.

In addition, two women's boutiques soon will open at the West 65th Street and Detroit Avenue intersection.

One of the businesses, Turnstyle, will sell a mix of vintage and contemporary items. The other business comes from “Project Runway” fashion designer Valerie Mayen, who is creating a “pop-up” store of her fashions next to the Capitol Theatre on West 65th Street.

Gordon Square Arts District in Cleveland wins national recognition

Gordon Square, the emerging art district in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood on Cleveland's West Side, has won big time kudos from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National League of Cities.

It has also pulled down $2.7 million in recent federal, state and local grants, which will be used to build or renovate community theaters that are central to its vision of using the arts to revive a city neighborhood. "Lots of good stuff is happening," said Joy Roller, the district's executive director. "To me, it's an acknowledgement that what we're doing is not only successful, but is a novel approach, a unique approach on how to revitalize an urban core."

The NEA announced earlier this month that Gordon Square is one of 14 case studies in a new publication, "Creative Placemaking."

Co-authored by arts advocates Ann Markusen and Ann Gadwa, the document is a project of the NEA's Mayor's Institute on City Design. The mission of the agency is to educate U.S. mayors to become the "chief urban designers" of their cities.

The case studies are intended to encourage mayors to think creatively about how everything from loft housing to art galleries can build economic value and encourage investment.

The chapter in the case study on Gordon Square praises the project for helping to leverage an estimated $500 million in related investments on the West Side of Cleveland over the past eight years, much of it in housing, even though Gordon Square is only halfway through a $30 million revitalization.

The project is a collaborative venture among three non-profit organizations, the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, Cleveland Public Theatre and Near West Theatre.

The goal of the district is to renovate two historic theaters -- Cleveland Public and the Capitol -- and to build a new home for Near West. By using the arts as an anchor for related retail, restaurant and housing development, the district is sparking new life in a 15-block corridor from W. 58th Street to West 73rd St., with Detroit Avenue as the spine.

The Capitol Theatre, located in the historic Gordon Square Arcade at W. 65th Street and Detroit Avenue, reopened in 2009 as a movie theater after a renovation. Work on Cleveland Public Theatre is ongoing. And the arts district has raised roughly half of the $6.5 million it needs to build a new Near West Theater, designed by Cleveland architect Richard Fleischman, Roller said.

"Creative Placemaking" said the district has " revitalizing the area's commercial core with arts offerings and new retail businesses while preserving and adding low-income housing units."

Echoing the praise from the NEA, the National League of Cities has invited Roller to represent Gordon Square as one of 26 programs from the across the country that will be showcased in its upcoming National Congress of Cities in Denver, starting Tuesday.

In addition to the outside attention, Gordon Square announced it has received a $1 million matching grant from the Fowler Family Foundation and a $500,000 matching grant from the Gund Foundation, both for the Near West Theatre project. Roller said her organization has another $3.5 million to raise before it can build the theater.

"With Near West, we are inching closer to realizing our dream of building a new home for that theater," Roller said.

A separate grant of $1 million in federal stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's State Energy Program will be used immediately to air condition Cleveland Public Theatre for the first time, which means it can be used year round, Roller said.

The State of Ohio has also kicked in $200,000 for asbestos removal at Cleveland Public, which will make the theater safer to use, Roller said.

The national attention focused on Gordon Square shouldn't create the impression that the project has gone unnoticed locally. In June, the district won a Cleveland Arts Prize.

The national recognition for the district offers more proof that "Cleveland should be very proud of this model we've created in the Gordon Square Arts District," Roller said. "It's good news for Cleveland."

The Coventry of the West?

Could it be that Detroit Avenue is becoming the Coventry of the West? I suppose the bloggers disagree, but think about it. Take out the college campus, and got some striking similarities.

The Capitol Theatre, an independant three-screen theatre, the Cleveland Public Theatre, an Avante-garde "off-broadway" performing arts experience, and a string of retail shops line Detroit Avenue. Add to that mix Gypsy Beans & Baking Co (coffee shop and bistro), LUXE (a trendy restaurant and lounge), Stone Mad (Irish Pub), La Boca, Happy Dog, Reddstone, and more!

What about a new street-scape so people can walk into the shops like Kitsch City and Room Service? Oh... it has that coming too... See the video below.

Even if there's only one Coventry, like my bloggers on the CCL Facebook wall said, you have to admit that Detroit Avenue is really coming into it's own and developing. I'm excited... I think I'll go to LUXE tonight!
