Friday Round Up: All About The Detroit Shoreway

Looking to really kick off the weekend with a bang? There are two super great parties that will be taking place in The Detroit Shoreway this Friday night.

Pedaling Art is opening at The Wall Eye Gallery at 53rd and Detroit. Stop in from 6-11pm to check out the premiere of this exhibit, featuring art from recycling bicycle pieces and other bike inspired art. Ohio City Bike Co-Op will be providing complimentary bicycle valet if you choose to arrive on two wheels.

Another great Friday night event that is not to be missed is The Gordon Square Arts District's Hip to Be Square Party. Taking place at the Battery Park Powerhouse, this lavish event is to benefit the community with a VIP reception from 7-8pm and general admission to the party that runs from 8 to midnight. Enjoy appetizers provided by GSAD restaurants and an open wine and beer bar. VIP tickets can be purchased for $125 and general admission tickets can be purchased for $75. Come on out and support the community in style!

The Anti McMansion - From WKYC

Did you know in the past ten years, nearly 500 homes have sold for over $200,000 and by comparison only 27 sold in that same area in the decade prior? Battery Park Wine Bar

I had a chance to peak at the BPWB when I was at The Reckoning Event on Saturday, but have yet to visit it myself. Below is a snippet of a write up from Blog-friend Alexa, at Cleveland's a Plum. Enjoy!

Last night, post errands, i ended up having a lovely impromptu evening with friends at the newly opened battery park wine bar in the detroit shoreway neighborhood.

this having been my second visit i knew what to expect in the great decor, delicious wine and wonderful and attentive service - but this time i came with an appetite and just in time for happy hour.

battery park wine bar, or BPWB as i'm beginning to call it for short, has a great happy hour for people who don't necessarily get out of work at 5pm. their happy hour goes from 3pm to 7:30pm and you can get $4 heavy poured glasses of wine, $3 beer specials and $2 off all appetizers which are more like meals in my humble opinion.

as seanski and i bellied up to the bar we had made it just in time for happy hour and we took full advantage of the $2 off appetizers by ordering a lot of food and thanks to chef dimitris ragousis and sous chef paul demelto it was a whole lot of delicious food.

the y.o.l.o. (you only live once) salad (only $4 during HH!)- greens, candied pecans, golden raisins and a grappa vinaigrette was so light and refreshing and quite honestly i've never tasted anything like it - i'm officially a grappa vinaigrette fan now.

Saved From the Snow

If your car got stuck in a Cleveland neighborhood, the local media might lead you to think you're in a world of trouble... unless you get stuck in the newly branded "Edgewater Hill" block of the Detroit Shoreway, which includes Battery Park.

During the "Great Blizzard of 2008," some Battery Park residents represented the essence of neighborly love. Starting at 7:45am, residents took out their shovels and began digging out stranded cars from the streets of the Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood. It was community bonding in an unconventional way.

One lady was travelling home to West Park with her children after an afternoon sled ride, when she got caught in a snow mound on West 74th. Neighbors hastened to her aide and even entertained the children outside the car while a few worked to push the van all the way to Detroit Avenue. While the recipients of these random acts of kindness expressed gratitude, the real benefactors were the neighbors who got the opportunity to bond with each other during the snow storm.
