Cleveland has four absolutely awesome mentions on the list of America's 100 Best Beer Bars: 2012 from Draft Magazine. Cleveland's mentions include Buckeye Beer Engine in Lakewood, La Cave Du Vin in Cleveland Heights, McNulty's Beer Market in Ohio City, and a nice acknowledgement of all 14 Winking Lizard establishments. Cleveland's Aquarium Opens SATURDAY!

The time has come for Cleveland's West Bank of The Flats to come back to life. This Saturday, January 21st the Cleveland Aquarium in the Old Powerhouse Building will be open to the public. Swim with sharks, visit exotic aquatic life, and acquaint yourself with local Lake Erie creatures. Our new aquarium will be the only free standing aquarium in the state and the architects made sure to preserve the historic nature of the structure. The building and experience will truly be one of a kind! The aquarium hopes to attract 500,000 people in 2012 alone, this will hopefully encourage other businesses to bring their establishments Downtown and specifically to The Flats. Cowork Cleveland- Opening Friday!

Cowork Cleveland, a new coworking space in Ohio City is opening its doors this Friday (December 9th) to the public with a happy hour from 5-7:30pm with GLBC beer on hand. Stop by the new 1000 square foot office equipped with WiFi, a conference room, 8 foot white board, printers, copiers, and a soon-to-be full service coffee bar to learn more about the workspace of the future. Space can be rented by the day, month, or year. Located in the Ohio City Firehouse at 1455 W. 29th Street.

Greater Cleveland Aquarium to open January 21

(Cleveland) - The Greater Cleveland Aquarium will open its doors to the public on Saturday, January 21, 2012, with special pass holder preview days on Thursday and Friday January 19 and 20, 2012.

Individual tickets go on sale in January, but annual passes can be purchased now, and allow attendees to get a first look during the two preview says.

The $33 million dollar facility was designed and built by Marinescape New Zealand, and is located in Cleveland's historic Powerhouse, and has two sections. One featuring local freshwater fish, and the section highlighting salt water species, including sharks.

Spokesman Kayla Ott says the highlight is the giant Seat Tube where visitors can walk through the Aquarium and view the animals up close.

Ott tells Newsradio WTAM 1100, the Aquarium is the only free-standing aquarium in Ohio. It will be home to more than five thousand freshwater and saltwater fish.

The Greater Cleveland Aquarium will be open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas), but hours will be extended for the opening weekend.

Admission: Adults $21.95, children (2 to 12 years old), $15.95. Discounts are available for groups of 15 or more.

Annual Passes: Adult: $50; Couple: $90; Family (2 adults and 2 children): $130; Additional Child passes can be purchased with any of these levels for $25 each.

Guests can purchase annual passes online at www.greaterclevelandaquarium.com. Annual passes start at $50.

Tremont's 10,000 LED Light Project

RTA Bar Crawl

For the first time ever, Cleveland is having a RTA Bar Crawl through the city thanks to Joe from Mildly Relevant.
The crawl will take place this Saturday, August 27th and begins at 1pm at The Westside Market. You can jump on the crawl at any point during the route. The bar crawl route can be found here. The route takes to many of Cleveland's great neighborhoods. The bar crawl isn't just about getting drunk with your friends on a Saturday, its about exploring Cleveland and helping people realize that public transportation *is* safe, accessible, and easy.

The Feast- Little Italy's Festival Glory

This Friday, August 12th through Monday August 15th Cleveland's Little Italy will transform into The Feast of The Assumption, a 4 day street festival that is infamous to many Clevelanders; Italian or otherwise. Enjoy the four day celebration by restaurant jumping and visiting the pop up tents that overrun the neighborhood. The street is closed off from traffic and thousands of people per day stop in to enjoy the festivities. Friday and Saturday night the festivities go until midnight, and admission is free. Enjoy drinks, dancing, and of course- cannoli!

Rock Hall Summer In The City Concert Series

Yesterday I finally was able to check out the FREE summer concerts at The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Das Racist was performing, and I almost bought tickets to see them at Pitchfork this weekend- so it was a great plus to be able to see them with a more intimate crowd and of course, for free! The show was great, it was easily accessible by bike, and the crowd was a cool mix. Food trucks and a beer tent rounded out the evening nicely. The venue is more than anyone could ask for- THE museum of music, with perfect sunsets over beautiful Lake Erie. I can't wait to go next week! This Friday I had the pleasure of riding my bike over to East 4th Street for an evening of shopping and mingling at the street's only retail venue, Dredgers Union. Danielle Deboe's latest retail venture hosted her event, Made In The 216, a collaboration of local artists and designers for sale goods and it was a fabulous party! The crowd was perfection, the vibe on the street was buzzing, and the selections were amazing! If my wallet was bottomless I would have needed a moving truck to take home all of the furniture I wanted. If you haven't checked out the store yet, make sure to stop in. 4th of July Weekend in The CLE

Sushi at Sunset- Presented by Emerging Chefs

Last night I attended the Sushi @ Sunset event at Asia Town Center. The venue was changed last minute due to weather, but Asia Town’s ambiance was perfect! Always a fan of al fresco dining, I was a little disappointed we couldn’t have it on the roof top as originally planned, but alas…

My favorite portion of the night was a yellow tail sashimi with jalapenos paired with a delicious Savgionion Blanc. All of the food and drink pairings were spot on, and the fish was so fresh!

Here we have Michael DeAloia and Rick Turner, two out of the three founders of Emerging Chefs with Chef Danny Cassano, of Sushi Rock, in the middle. Michael and Rick’s mission is to highlight amazing Cleveland chefs in unique spaces throughout the city. They bring so many layers of creativity to their events and I loved every minute of it! The space, the design, the food, the drinks, the DJ, it makes for quite an event. I look forward to attending more- they have them once a month! Summer Weekends in CLE

It has been a busy week with the launch of The Cleveland City Living Awards, but I couldn't resist sharing all of the awesomeness that our great city has going on this weekend!

But first, the picture above is one of the many that I snapped at Parade The Circle last weekend. I just needed to give a shout out to University Circle and The Detroit Shoreway for giving me one of the best (and free) Saturdays in Cleveland. I can't say it enough- the trollies were perfectly timed, the day was beautiful, and the crowds were happy- it was a great sign of summer!

This weekend offers just as much fun around Cleveland. I am thrilled to announce the soft opening of the first retail on E. 4th in years, Dredgers Union, that is taking place this Friday night. Danielle Deboe's latest venture looks more then promising and I can't wait to get my shop on!

Also this weekend is the 6th Annual Ohio City Market District Run & Crawl 5k. This 5k night run/walk is a sure way to kick start your Saturday night! Many of the restaurants in the neighborhood offer specials for post-race celebrating. I hope to see you there!

Party in The Square!

It may be time to Parade in The Circle, but that also means its time to Party in The Square! Saturday, June 11th The Gordon Square Arts District will transform into a big block party with Lolley The Trolley rides back and forth to University Circle from 10-8pm. The party will include live music, public theater, a beer garden, and walking tours of the neighborhood.

*Personally, I plan to bike over to Party in Gordon Square and then take one of the trolley's over to Parade in The Circle. All this will make for a great weekend in CLE! I hope to see you there!

Emerging Chefs Present: Sushi @ Sunset

Coventry Village's Music and Movies Series

Summer weather has officially hit Cleveland, and with that comes all of the wonderful summer events. Coventry Village isn't technically in Cleveland, but its close by and well worth the trip. Starting June 17th Coventry will begin hosting their weekly Summer Music & Movies events. The Friday events will include music concerts and movies in the park. The first Friday event will begin at 6:00 with the Coventry Art Fair. Two bands will play sets until the 9:00pm start time of The Wizard of Oz. These are great free events every weekend, so pack a picnic and bring a blanket and enjoy the outdoor festivities! Head over to the park and take in the Music and the Movies each and every Friday of summer!

Tribe Time!!

Sunday I had the pleasure of spending the SUNNY day at the Indians vs Reds game. I couldn't have imagined a nicer day, even if I did have to escape to the air conditioning in The Terrace Club for a bit (shocking, considering the weather we've been having).

Sweeping The Reds left me with quite the satisfaction for the day. The last time I felt that kind of energy at Progressive Field it was called The Jake and I was in Middle School. Feeling such amazing positivity downtown is always exciting.

I can't close this post without mentioning the amazing food and beverage items at Progressive- I indulged in this chicken and waffle sandwich, had a Summer Shandy from The Leinenkugel booth, and of course enjoyed a stadium hotdog. I decided to hold off on the signature Food Network Steak Sandwich, but there's always next time. GO TRIBE!

Friday Round Up: All About The Detroit Shoreway

Looking to really kick off the weekend with a bang? There are two super great parties that will be taking place in The Detroit Shoreway this Friday night.

Pedaling Art is opening at The Wall Eye Gallery at 53rd and Detroit. Stop in from 6-11pm to check out the premiere of this exhibit, featuring art from recycling bicycle pieces and other bike inspired art. Ohio City Bike Co-Op will be providing complimentary bicycle valet if you choose to arrive on two wheels.

Another great Friday night event that is not to be missed is The Gordon Square Arts District's Hip to Be Square Party. Taking place at the Battery Park Powerhouse, this lavish event is to benefit the community with a VIP reception from 7-8pm and general admission to the party that runs from 8 to midnight. Things To Do: Cleveland Asian Festival

The Cleveland Asian Festival will be taking place this upcoming weekend (May 21-22) in Asia Town at The Asia Plaza Shopping Center on Payne and E. 30th. The event is FREE to the public and begins at 11am and ends at 7pm. The festivities include ethnic performances, cultural displays, and art workshops. Expect booths from many of the delicious restaurants in the neighborhood as well as cultural groups in the area. If you're brave enough- don't forget to enter in the egg roll food competition.

Cleveland Bicycle Week: Bikespresso

Bikespresso: A coffee infused biking event is taking place on Saturday, May 14th at 3:30pm. The event is hosted by Phoenix Coffee Co. and Roots Cafe in Lakewood. The event will begin at The West 9th Phoenix Coffee location and make several pit stops through Cleveland on its way to The Detroit Shoreway neighborhood and its end point/after party spot- XYZ Tavern. In order to ride, bikers are asked to contribute at least a $5 donation to aide a fund to create more bike racks around the city.

Cleveland's Going to Prom!

This Friday, May 13th The Warehouse District's Velvet Dog (W. 6th) will be hosting The Cleveland Prom- claiming 'its prom the way it should have been'. I'm very excited to announce the host for the evening's event will be Dennis Haskins of MR. BELDING fame via one of my all time faves, Saved By The Bell. The evening will also boast Bayside High Cheerleaders, Prom King & Queen awards, a red carpet, and balloon drop- all with no cover charge!

Prom attire is *more* then encouraged and prom night begins at 9pm. Enjoy the 90's flash back and an excuse for a great time!

BOOMBOX Challenge!

America's Next Great Food Truck- Its Homegrown in CLE

After some leaks on Twitter regarding the hit show and second season of Food Network's The Great Food Truck Race, it has been confirmed that Chris Hodgson has launched his newest food truck, Hodge Podge on the show. Entrepreneur, chef, and truck drive Chris Hodgson is responsible for gifting Cleveland with the truly amazeballs food truck Dim and Den Sum. The show is currently taping and competing across America as we speak, and premiers on Food Network on Sunday, August 14th at 10pm. Recap of The Fantastic Tweed Ride

While I had to miss the actual tweed ride because of work, I was able to meet up with the gang post-ride at The Happy Dog. I had just bought my bike that day and was eager to take it for a spin. The Happy Dog was in full force Saturday afternoon; tweed was aplenty, beers were flowing, and dogs were slangin'. This year's ride included a bit more than 70 riders that cruised throughout Cleveland's downtown, Tremont, Ohio City, and Detroit Shoreway neighborhoods. Amazing prizes were provided by Grey Cardigan, Spin Bike Shop, and Rickshaw Bags. They are considering a ride again in the Fall, but organizers assured me there will be ride next Spring for sure. Either way, I will keep you posted on all bike events in The Cle.

Well well.. I don't really know how this blog post should be written, and that is for a few reasons. Reason one: I know nothing about video games (and would prefer to keep it that way) Reason two: I don't really know that much about football. I do know I like Peyton Hillis and that I really like Cleveland publicity. So far, so good- win win. Then I was told about The Madden Curse. I'm a little superstitious, so sure I felt a little nervous initially, but after some serious thought, I realize a Madden curse is the least Cleveland has to worry about- We've triumphed over much bigger issues. So I say, bring it curse, this is Cleveland- YOU'VE GOTTA BE TOUGH!

The Fantastic Cleveland Tweed Ride

I for one am very happy to check out the exhibit because I just returned from a year in Korea and enjoy being able to still experience their culture from Cleveland. I think it will also be a great opportunity to meet some new folks, enjoy some sake, and of course nosh on some treats!

Cleveland's Downtown Population Growing

USA Today highlighted how and why urban neighborhoods are growing in a great article today. It discusses how urban centers are growing, and much of the population is thanks to young college educated professionals. The national news source highlighted Cleveland and said the following:

In Cleveland, which lost 17% of its population, downtown added 1,300 college-educated people ages 25 to 34, up 49%.

If that isn't a reason to be happy in Cle, I don't know what is. News like this is EXACTLY what keeps Cleveland City Living (the blog and in real life) moving and groving.

Lots of new business happening around Gordon Square

The already-bustling Gordon Square Arts District is getting a little busier with the addition of three new retail businesses.

Wednesday marked the official opening of Sweet Moses, a soda fountain and treat shop at 6800 Detroit Avenue, one block west of the Gordon Square Arcade.

The owner is Jeff Moreau, who's offering a turn-of-the-century soda shop experience. Sweet Moses serves homemade ice cream dishes and handmade confections. Coming soon will be peanut butter sandwiches that can be topped with options including bacon, marshmallow cream, Nutella, sliced bananas and potato chips.

In addition, two women's boutiques soon will open at the West 65th Street and Detroit Avenue intersection.

One of the businesses, Turnstyle, will sell a mix of vintage and contemporary items. The other business comes from “Project Runway” fashion designer Valerie Mayen, who is creating a “pop-up” store of her fashions next to the Capitol Theatre on West 65th Street.

Cleveland, West Side Market tapped to host International Public Markets Conference in 2012

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland has edged out competitors -- including London and Toronto -- to host an international conference focused on public markets in 2012.

The Project for Public Spaces, a nonprofit group based in New York, will announce today that it has tapped Cleveland as the host city for several days of discussions, events and tours.

The conference promises national and global attention for Cleveland's growing local food scene and the West Side Market, which will celebrate its 100th birthday late next year.

Representatives of the city, the Project for Public Spaces and local nonprofits will hold a news conference at the West Side Market at 1:30 p.m. They are considering several fall weekends, most likely in late September of next year, for the event.

The eighth International Public Markets Conference could occur shortly before or after Mayor Frank Jackson's annual sustainability conference, intended to focus on local food in 2012, and would be a prelude to the biggest of the West Side Market's birthday events.

Stephen Davies, senior vice president with the Project for Public Spaces, lauded Cleveland's pitch as the best of 20-something applications from potential host cities. The West Side Market and its upcoming centennial were key factors in helping Cleveland beat out finalists Seattle; Charleston, S.C.; along with Toronto and London.

"It was huge," Davies said. "It's one of the most stunning indoor public markets in the country, and there are not many left in the United States. There are some 150 of them, and Cleveland's historically is probably the grandest of them all."

David Gilbert, president of Positively Cleveland, the region's convention and visitors bureau, said the conference, which attracts roughly 300 people, may not be large in size "but it is large in importance."

"When you have conferences like this that have a real confluence with initiatives that our community is looking to highlight, that really helps," he said.

Spurred by the centennial, Mayor Jackson assembled a commission last spring to consider opportunities and potential improvements for the city-owned market building, market operations and the surrounding neighborhood. The effort, led by the city and Ohio City Near West Development Corp., also includes planning for events leading up to the market's birthday.

Ken Silliman, the mayor's chief of staff, said a report outlining recommendations for the market could be finished in late March or early April.

The city already plans to tackle roughly $400,000 in improvements to electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems at the market by early 2012.

"Cleveland is regaining the momentum it had in the mid-90s as a city on the move," Silliman said. "And now, as then, public-private partnerships play a major role in enabling that to happen. ... Leaders in that commission effort are largely responsible for getting this conference here."

Local businesses, nonprofit groups and foundations have committed more than $70,000 in cash and non-cash donations to support the public markets conference. A dozen organizations, ranging from Charter One bank to the MetroHealth System, wrote letters of support to the Project for Public Spaces and pledged assistance.

The city has offered to provide advertising and greeters at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and to open up the West Side Market for tours and conference events.

"As of right now, there's not any money from the city," said Eric Wobser, executive director of the Ohio City Near West neighborhood nonprofit group. "We'd like to keep it that way."

Occurring every few years, the public markets conference attracts market operators, planners, architects and food-policy enthusiasts from the United States and more than a dozen other countries. Past host cities include New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

In Cleveland, participants will stay at a downtown hotel, attend seminars and take daylong tours that could include trips to farmers markets, Amish country, local orchards, farms, dairies and urban gardens.

City Councilman Joe Cimperman, whose ward includes downtown and the Ohio City neighborhood, expects the conference to spotlight the growth of Cleveland's local-food economy and to add momentum to the Market District, the area surrounding the West Side Market. During the last year, a handful of restaurants, stores and small businesses have opened their doors or reserved spaces in the neighborhood, bringing bustle back to empty storefronts.

"Cleveland is in the top echelon of local-food cities," Cimperman said. "This is going to let people know why. The fact that the market will be the microphone to tell this story is really great."

Even though the weather man calls for temps in the 30's this weekend, a sure sign of Spring in Cleveland is the siting of a food truck. This Sunday afternoon from 11-3pm in Tremont's Lincoln Park around 10 of Cleveland's latest AND greatest food truck will be setting up shop for us all to have a taste. I'm envisioning a food crawl of sorts, or just what the world most beautiful traffic jam would look like. :)

The Cleveland International Film Festival Presents: Aardvark

Many Clevelanders are looking forward to the 35th Annual Cleveland International Film Festival this week, myself included. I'm curious to hear how you all plan on viewing films- are you buying tickets individually, in a six pack, or are you splurging for a pass? What films are you intending on seeing? I haven't broken down my full film list yet, but one movie I will definitely be seeing is Aardvark.

Aardvark is a film that is written and directed by native Clevelander, Kitao Sukurai. The film in its entirety is filmed in Cleveland and is fully casted by Clevelanders. So if you are looking to see one film, I would say this has to be it. It will fulfill any cultural and city pride requirements you may be looking for. The story itself is based on fact and one of true perseverance, and the only narrative film to star a blind man to date. Directly from the press release is a brief synopsis:

AARDVARK is the first narrative film to star a person blind since birth. The idea for the film began when Kitao Sakurai – now living in New York – visited the Evolution Jiu-Jitsu academy (evolutionjj.com) in Cleveland Heights, run by childhood friend Darren Branch. There, Sakurai met Larry Lewis Jr., a congenitally blind man who was training Jiu-Jitsu at Darren’s academy. Inspired by Larry’s use of Jiu-Jitsu to overcome his dark and troubled past, Kitao asked Larry and Darren to act out their lives – including the origin of their friendship – in front of the camera. What makes AARDVARK unique is where the movie goes from there: beginning as a documentary reenactment, AARDVARK slowly transforms into an entirely fictional neo-noir thriller that follows Larry as he embarks on a dark quest for vengeance. Aardvark blurs the lines between documentary and fiction in a startling and entirely unexpected way.

The Black and White Ball is an annual event put on by The Foundation for Community Betterment to raise money for local Clevelanders in need. Did you know the Cleveland St Patty's Day Parade has an average of 300,000 attendees? Last year 15,000 people alone were IN the parade! I for one am very excited for the events tomorrow. Working only until noon, our office is located right off of West 6th and we will be able to catch the parade at 1:00 and enjoy the day. The weather men are saying low 60's and sunny and I have a feeling its going to be a great turn out. Where are you planning on celebrating the holiday? Cleveland Mayor Jackson expresses 'sense of urgency' in State of the City speech

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson is who he is, a modest man who keeps his long-term goals always in sight.

So, he opened his State of the City speech today by saying he wanted to share his “sense of urgency” about a group of issues he has emphasized during his time in office: efforts to operate more efficiently and save money, to develop collaborative programs with other area communities and to transform Cleveland into a 21st century, 24-hour city built around its waterfront.

Mayor Jackson also concluded his 40-minute speech in front of an audience at Public Auditorium of nearly 1,000 business and civic leaders, students and senior citizens — and Gov. John Kasich — by repeating a challenge to civic leaders to work harder to improve the education of the region's children.

But he also had the opportunity to take a little credit and receive applause for two milestones for the city's public safety forces. First, he reported that Cleveland had only five fire fatalities in 2010, the fewest in 112 years. Then he said the city in 2010 recorded the fewest number of homicides in 40 years, though, he added, “Even one is too many.”

Responding to a rising level of complaints, he conceded that the city water department has “failed to provide the quality customer service our customers deserve.”

But mostly he rattled off examples of the way the city, developers and businesses are transforming the city, from the Flats East Bank project to the new convention center/medical mart and the development of 176 urban gardens. He said the gardens represent the making of a local food industry that can play a growing role in filling grocery shelves and restaurant menus.

“Today, the city of Cleveland is in a state of constant restructuring of operations,” he said.

But, he said, the changes in the way the city and its industries operate must be matched by an effort to transform the way children are educated.

“This community must demonstrate the same level of commitment, passion and desire to succeed for education,” Mayor Jackson said. “The time to do it is now, in this time of rapid change.”

Getting downtown Cleveland in touch with itself: editorial

This editorial that Scott sent me from Cleveland.com last night was too good not to share. The possibilities and excitement in Cleveland right now are palpable.

Cleveland needs an updated blueprint for how to connect downtown's new amenities, including a planned casino. Luckily, a blue-ribbon Group Plan Commission assembled by Mayor Frank Jackson is working on just such a vision to make the heart of Greater Cleveland more walkable and inviting to visitors, workers and residents.

Like any proposal, the tentative plan may need tweaks. The full 15-member commission has yet to sign off on it, and Jackson has indicated he wants to see a traffic study on the impact of closing Ontario Street to make Public Square more pedestrian-friendly. But Cleveland can't afford to miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reimagine its center and piggyback on more than $1 billion of public and private projects already under way.

Besides creating two large, rectangular spaces at Public Square by closing Ontario, the commission's working groups suggest a walkway connecting existing Malls to the lakefront and courtyards, gardens and a reflecting pool o the Malls atop the new convention center.

The overall effect would be to encourage foot traffic among downtown's emerging centers of energy, including the Warehouse District, East Fourth Street, the medical mart and the Terminal Tower casino.

Shepherded by City Planning Commission Chairman Anthony Coyne and including many downtown stakeholders, some of whom can be expected to contribute to the final cost, the commission has come up with an exciting roadmap while remaining true to the spirit of the original Daniel Burnham Group Plan.

Money remains an obvious issue. But the projected $90 million price tag does not seem insurmountable. One working group continues to look for private sources of capital, including naming rights. Given the large public investment in the convention center and Inner Belt Bridge, the private sector needs to step up. The commission also must find the right entity to maintain and program the new public spaces.

The opportunity is enormous. The vision and the civic willpower appear to be keeping pace.

Prospects brighten for ferry service between Cleveland and Canada

Officials of the city of Central Elgin, Ontario, met earlier this month with a consultant for the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, and on Monday the city's council passed a resolution supporting further discussions.

Port Authority president William Friedman hired the consultant late last year to see if he could get talks moving on a ferry that would haul cargo and passengers across Lake Erie.

“We are delighted the Central Elgin officials want to discuss this potentially exciting opportunity,” Mr. Friedman said in a statement. “We believe there is interest on both sides of the lake for this service now, and we see that interest only growing in the next several years with construction of several major developments in Cleveland, including a casino.”

The Port Authority has discussed the idea of ferry service for more than five years. But there were problems initially with finding a Canadian partner, and then one side or the other would lose enthusiasm for the project as the idea simmered.

Nearly $7 million in federal aid has been made available to build an Ohio terminal for a community that can put together a ferry deal.

Canada is Ohio's top trading partner, and a ferry route could reduce shipping costs between central Ontario to Cleveland.

In his statement, Mr. Friedman said HMS Global Maritime of New Albany, Ind., has expressed interest in exploring the possibility of operating the higher-speed ferry service.

Forest City closes $85 million sale of land for Cleveland casino

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The developer of a planned Cleveland casino has purchased 16 acres of downtown land from Forest City Enterprises Inc. for $85 million.

Forest City sold the land and air rights to Rock Ohio Caesars Cleveland LLC, the real estate company announced this morning. The property is adjacent to Forest City's Tower City Center, an office, hotel and retail complex on Public Square.

The casino developer paid $11 million cash at closing and will pay the balance in installments in late 2011 and 2012.

"This sale is milestone in the process of bringing a first-class casino to Tower City, and the start of an exciting new future for downtown Cleveland entertainment," said David LaRue, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Forest City. "The sale is also a demonstration of the value embedded in Forest City's portfolio of real estate. We anticipate that a successful casino will stimulate further downtown revitalization and economic development, and will also have a positive impact on the long-term value of our Tower City assets."

Rock Ohio Caesars LLC is a joint venture between Rock Gaming and Caesars Entertainment, which plan to develop and run casinos in downtown Cleveland and Cincinnati. The developer is expected to open a first phase, short-term casino in the Higbee Building at Tower City and to open the larger casino behind Tower City in 2013.

December unemployment rates in Cuyahoga, contiguous counties beat Ohio

According to The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Cuyahoga county is a full percentage point below the state level of unemployment. This is great new for Cleveland residents and those potentially relocating to our city by the lake!

This weekend I had the pleasure of bumping into the Umami Moto Food Truck outside of the 4th Coast Pop Up Market. Notes on both- The Pop Up Market seemed like a huge success. I went on Friday evening post dinner at Tremont Tap House and the warehouse was packed! There was an amazing amount of art (wearable and hangable!) on display. The food truck also seems to be a huge success! Since I arrived right after dinner I was too full for a meal, but indulged in some pot stickers that were delish! If you come across the truck I recommend you try it. A busy week is ahead, so hopefully there will be some exciting posts.

New retail shop 'Dredgers Union' opening downtown on East 4th Street

CLEVELAND - There has long been a void in downtown Cleveland's retail market. Major depatment stores have closed, and only a sprinkling of new shops have opened.

Danielle DeBoe and Sean Bilovecky hope to change that trend. They plan to open Dredgers Union -- a 4,500 square-foot store on East 4th Street right in downtown Cleveland.

"There is great momentum happening in Cleveland. Downtown is poised to turn a corner," said DeBoe.

Dredgers Union will be housed in what used to be an old McCrory's store. DeBoe said she plans on having a wide variety of merchandise in the store. Gift items, furniture and even their own line of clothing will be available when the store opens in June of this year.

Dredgers Union will service the growing number of downtown residents. With many restaurants and shops thriving along East 4th Street, it's only natural that a department-like store be built.

Welcome center is a great new starting point for Cleveland State University

Cleveland State University has been striving to change the "feel" of its campus for several years now, and the results have been healthy, to say the least.
Just for fun, Jim Pressler of Cleveland and daughter Claire try out the photo booth at the newly opened Cleveland State University welcome center.

What was once an enclosed, concrete fortress has steadily been transformed into an outward-looking, far more inviting center of higher learning. What was once widely seen as "just a commuter school" is working hard to become a real residential campus.

This fall came the latest architectural change -- one that the general public won't see, but that prospective students and their parents will: A new welcome center is now the place where admissions counselors work, where campus tours are launched and where newcomers get their first inkling of what CSU is like.

The welcome center is nestled among the new Euclid Commons dorms, right at the heart of residential campus life. It's a place that gives prospective students an opportunity to connect with CSU's history and envision their own futures in and beyond college. It's a vibe changer, and that's a good thing.

Coral Co. ramps up residential construction next to Crocker Park

WESTLAKE, Ohio -- The Coral Co. is dusting off its plans and building homes again next to the Crocker Park shopping center in Westlake.

The developer, based in University Heights, has started construction of 11 homes and just received city approval of plans to build 11 lofts along the western edge of a parking garage.

Despite the sluggish real estate market, Coral and several other Northeast Ohio homebuilders saw sales pick up in 2010 - and they are hopeful about this year.

"We think that 2011 is a stabilizing year," said Peter Rubin, Coral's president and chief executive officer.

New home construction in Northeast Ohio slid from 8,023 housing starts in 2006 to 2,625 in 2009, according to data for nine counties tracked by Atwell, a real estate services company. Atwell research specialist Trista McClelland expects last year's housing starts to be in the 2,700-range.

After several slow years, Coral sold off the last of its 24 completed homes at Westhampton in 2010. The project eventually could comprise 125 homes, and buyers already have committed to five of the 11 that Coral recently started building to the south of Dick's Sporting Goods. Construction could start on the second group of 11 homes in June.

Coral's buyers generally are empty nesters and young professionals. Many residents at Westhampton have lived outside Northeast Ohio and are familiar with more urban-style home designs, such as a garage on the first floor, a living room and kitchen on the second, bedrooms on the third and a rooftop patio. Prices at Westhampton range from $309,000 for a two-bedroom loft to $495,000 for a four-bedroom manor home.

Crocker Park, which is inking deals with retailers including Anthropologie, according to public records, is a huge draw. Steve Rubin, the chief operating officer for Crocker Park developer Stark Enterprises, would not identify any potential tenants at the shopping center but said almost all the space is spoken for or is the subject of negotiations with retailers.

Westlake isn't the only community where residential builders are pushing ahead. On Cleveland's west side, Vintage Development Group closed a dozen sales last year and is building eight more townhouses and two freestanding homes at Battery Park.

In Cleveland Heights, developer Ken Lurie plans to break ground for 16 townhouses at the Bluestone community, after averting a foreclosure on the project's condominium building last year and slashing prices.

WXZ Development is building another cluster of homes at East 118th Street and Euclid Avenue in University Circle, and sales have been steady at 27 Coltman, a high-end townhouse development in Little Italy.

Westhampton is about 18 months behind schedule because of the recession and the real estate crisis, Coral's Rubin said. But the privately held company, which also owns and manages apartment buildings and shopping centers, has the money to move forward and the patience to see the project through.

"It's going to be another challenging year," he said, "but the trajectory is getting better."

Cleveland RTA lands $2.2 million for new trolley and bus service

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- RTA has landed $2.2 million for a slew of new services in and around downtown Cleveland, including a night-time trolley service and a route serving the rock hall and science center.

The money covers just one year of operation. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority hopes that Gov.-elect John Kasich's administration will support funding the services for two years after that.

More than 40 businesses and public bodies backed RTA's request for the money.

The money comes from a $10 million pot doled out this week by the Ohio Department of Transportation for transit statewide.

It's part of the Next Generation fund, established by outgoing Gov. Ted Strickland in October. The money is focused on economic development and getting people to job centers.

Strickland committed one year of funding under a three-year plan. It now falls to the Kasich camp to decide how two, subsequent years of ODOT money will be spent.

RTA officials are still crafting details of the new services, including launch dates. The new routes are:

"C-Line" downtown trolley: It will run from 7 to 11 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekends.

It extends service offered by two, free trolley routes that ply downtown routes during the day.

"Rock-Line" weekend trolley: It will serve the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and the Great Lakes Science Center, via Public Square.

The service will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Campus Connector: This route will serve students, workers and residents between Cleveland State University and Cuyahoga Community College Metro Campus.

Students taking classes at both schools will be able to move more quickly between campuses, RTA said.

Southwest Connector, Southeast Connector and Steelyard Direct: The routes will serve riders going to work, hospitals and other destinations in areas including Ohio City, Old Brooklyn and the Steelyard Commons shopping center.

Money secured, work to start next week on Flats aquarium

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A whole lot of fish from around the world are expected on Cleveland's shores in the fall.

Jacobs Entertainment announced Friday that it had secured the $33 million needed for the first phase of a long-discussed aquarium in the Powerhouse on the Flats' west bank. Officials hope to start construction next week and expect the attraction to open later this year.

They're also designing an eventual second phase estimated at more than $40 million.

Mayor Frank Jackson said in a news release, "The Greater Cleveland Aquarium is one of the many new projects that will help reinforce downtown Cleveland as a destination for residents, visitors and businesses."

Patrick J. McKinley, executive vice president of Jacobs Entertainment, said, "We expect this to serve as a catalyst for additional development for years to come."

Officials hope for synergy among the aquarium and other downtown attractions, including the planned casino and the Flats East Bank project that recently broke ground.

The aquarium will be a U.S. first for Marinescape NZ Ltd., which has developed 21 aquariums in Europe, Asia, Australia and its home country of New Zealand. The Flats aquarium will occupy more than 70,000 square feet in the historic Powerhouse at Jacobs' Nautica Entertainment Complex, which opened in the late 1980s.

The aquarium will include a "SeaTube" of clear acrylic for a walk-through view of marine depths. It will also offer environmental education, with classrooms, full-time teachers and research projects. Officials hope for more than 400,000 visitors annually. The average ticket price is set at under $14.

Last November, the City Council let Jacobs reduce the number of guaranteed full-time jobs from 40 to 20 in return for a $2 million city loan for Phase 1. But Jacobs officials still predict 40 full-time jobs, which would have $1.6 million in wages per year.

Phase 1's financiers include FirstEnergy Corp. and AMPCO, which operates Nautica's parking lot. Officials are still exploring Phase 2's financing, timetable and more. They foresee a new building with glass atriums along the river.

Phase 1 will occupy much of the Powerhouse. The building will still house Lolly the Trolley's headquarters and Windows on the World, a recently expanded banquet facility. It will add an aquarium-themed restaurant.

The Cleveland Improv comedy club will move this month from the Powerhouse to bigger, renovated space in Nautica's old Sugar Warehouse, which also is the site of Shooters on the Water. Nautica Charity Poker Festivals will move next to McCarthy's Ale House in a historic Nautica building across the street. Officials hope to move the Powerhouse Pub and the adjoining Howl at the Moon bar elsewhere in the complex.

The complex also includes the Nautica Queen dock, the Nautica Pavilion amphitheater and the Apartments at Nautica. It does not include the somewhat intermingled Christie's Cabaret and Harbor Inn.

The previous Cleveland Aquarium closed at Gordon Park in 1986, and its fish were moved to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Several local groups have talked about opening other aquariums.

Cleveland's medical mart construction starts downtown

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The ceremonial groundbreaking for Cuyahoga County's $465 million medical mart and convention center is nearly two weeks away, but construction crews descended on the downtown malls this morning.

The county took ownership of the site today.

Barriers are up along Lakeside Avenue. Precision Environmental is preparing to start asbestos removal, and Independence Excavating Inc. is ready to start demolition, said Barb Shergalis, the county's in-house project manager. Trees will also be shredded, since they are too large to move.

"I'm incredibly excited," Shergalis said. "It's so awesome to see all of these people going to work."

The complex has been in the works since 2007, when county commissioners imposed a 20-year, quarter-cent sales tax increase to finance the four-story showplace for medical technology and a connected, L-shaped convention center beneath Malls B and C.

Turner Construction Co. will manage construction, and Chicago-based MMPI will manage the complex, expected to open in September 2013.

MMPI will host a groundbreaking Jan. 14, at which the company will reveal the more than 40 companies who have signed letters of intent to lease showroom space in the mart.

Cleveland.com has been reporting on some great Cleveland news all week, but especially great to me was the recap on Cleveland Farmers Markets in 2010. Living away from Cleveland for six years, in much bigger urban environments, it was sometimes hard to find great local produce (even more so on the cheap).
So I loved hearing that Cleveland is now a top contender in most farmers markets in the nation. Here is a quote from Cleveland.com :

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently updated its national list of farmers markets, Ohio ranked the seventh highest in overall number of registered markets at 213, and sixth in the top list of winter markets, with 34. It was also the ninth highest in percentage growth of markets with a 36 percent growth from 2009 to this year.

Its really great news knowing Clevelanders can eat local, fresh, and affordable all year long. On that note, its lunch time here....

Cleveland: Be a tourist in your own city

CLEVELAND -- With the kids off from school, it can be hard to keep them busy. But there is a way to keep them entertained and learn something at the same time. A local woman created walking tours of Cleveland's main attractions.

Jennifer Coleman started City Prowl Cleveland. She has gathered a wealth of information about the buildings some of us pass everyday or haven't seen in a while.

All you will need is a computer and an MP3 player to download the tours.

Jennifer gives you specific instructions on where to start the tours, and walks you through giving you the history of that specific area.

"I think if people knew more about how special some of the structures and the story of the culture of the city are, they would be ambassadors and know that Cleveland is really a special town," says Coleman.

The tours are less than 45 minutes and you can stop and start them as many times as you like.

There are 8 tours, including the Warehouse District, Public Square, Wade Park and the Fairfax neighborhood.

Flats East Bank project closes financing, to start construction

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Construction will start this week on the long-delayed Flats East Bank project, now that developers have finally locked in the money to build offices, a hotel, retail and a park at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River.

The Wolstein Group and Fairmount Properties closed on their financing Tuesday - making a $272 million development real after years of dreaming and planning. Set to open in spring 2013, the project will extend downtown Cleveland to the waterfront and include the central business district's first new multi-tenant office building in more than a decade.

The project is a rare private, urban development to move forward, in the wake of a recession and a financial crisis that roiled the real estate industry. And it is one of three potential game-changers for downtown Cleveland, where a new convention center-medical mart project is scheduled to break ground soon and a casino is in the works.

"We have major headquarters that are here in Cleveland that will remain in Cleveland as a result of this," Mayor Frank Jackson said. "I believe it will eventually attract other people to that part of the city and, in some fashion, may even move what we consider the center of town as people begin to consider the water's edge as a place where they want to live and work."

Loans and grants from the city are among 35 sources of funding for the project. To pay for the 18-story office building, a 150-room Aloft hotel, a parking garage, retail and public spaces, the developers lined up everyone from major banks to foreign investors who hope to gain U.S. residency in exchange for putting money into the Flats.

Stakeholders described the project as the most complicated financial transaction in Northeast Ohio's history.

"Every professional involved would tell you this was the most complex undertaking and closing that they've ever been part of," said Adam Fishman, a principal with Fairmount Properties.

The $272 million first phase will house accounting firm Ernst & Young, law firm Tucker Ellis & West and the CB Richard Ellis real estate brokerage -- all downtown tenants itching for a new location. The Flats East Bank also will include a riverfront boardwalk and 14 acres of parkland. The green space eventually could be the site of residential development, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, once the economy improves and more financing becomes available.

"Today is finally the beginning of implementing my husband's vision for the Flats," said Iris Wolstein, whose husband, Bert Wolstein, hoped to turn the former nightlife mecca into a riverfront district. He died in 2004.

"While it has been a very long and treacherous road to get to today, this family collaboration will benefit our hometown and give the city a vibrant showcase for all of us and future generations of Clevelanders to enjoy," she said in a news release Tuesday afternoon.

Iris Wolstein and Scott Wolstein, her son and the executive chairman of Developers Diversified Realty Corp., unveiled their plans for the Flats East Bank in 2005. When financial markets collapsed in 2008, money for real estate disappeared and the development was put on hold. The Wolstein Group and Fairmount Properties struggled for two years, split the construction into phases and sought additional public and private funding sources to revive the project.

Wells Fargo Bank funded $53 million in bonds to support the office building. The Ohio Carpenters' Pension Fund and the Cleveland International Fund, a group of foreign investors, also stepped in on the first-mortgage bonds. FirstMerit Bank provided a loan. The federal government, the state and Cuyahoga County kicked in loans and grants.

Cleveland contributed nearly $53 million, $37.2 million of that in loans, worked with the developer on a deal to divert anticipated increases in property taxes from the project to pay for construction, and took advantage of a federal economic stimulus program to lower the cost of bonds for the project.

"These deals don't work with straight private financing anymore, particularly in cities like Cleveland or Pittsburgh where the market is not booming," said Tom Murphy, a senior resident fellow with the Urban Land Institute and a former Pittsburgh mayor. "This is an investment for the future that will create momentum in Cleveland."

Dip into Downward Dog at Battery Park

As a yoga lover, I have some very exciting news to share with the Cleveland community. The Battery Park Powerhouse is transforming their second floor and it will now serve as a yoga room on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Justin Glanville, who has been practicing yoga for over ten years, and teaching yoga since 2005 will be heading the classes. He is offering a beginners Vinyassa on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 10:15 and an intermediate Vinyassa class on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm to 7:45.
